The Mentalist Premiere
It was not bad. There were some moments that caused me to wonder what Bruno Heller is smoking and if I can have some too.
  • Bertram. Slimey political type or Red John operative?  Given that Michael Gaston has joined the cast of Unforgettable it's likely that Bertram is just a slimey political type.
  • Where the hell was LaRoche?
  • Seriously? A hair dryer? Bruno have you never watched Mythbusters? You can't kill people that way.
  • And don't get me started on the trial. Yeah, I mean I'm glad he wasn't guilty but honestly. He hypnotized the jury. That's what I believe.
  • And the ending. . . So kids it's not the post Red John era after all. So who was Timothy Carter? The guy who did kill Angela and Charlotte or just another brainwashed minion?  Is Red John more than one person?  Did the psycho wife know about Red John or was it just the couple that kidnaps a cheerleader together stays together?  It did seem like a major cop-out.
More I think about it, the more it bothers me that Jane got away with murder. Sure Carter was a psycho creep.  But if he wasn't Red John or the man who did kill Jane's wife and child, then where do we go from here with Jane? What right does he have for his moral high horse when he calls murderers names as he often does?  It'll be interesting to see if that gets swept under the rug or not. And actually will Lisbon be the only one who knows he got away with murder other than Red John and Jane? On one hand, it does signal a new chapter in their relationship that he told her like that instead of keeping it to himself.

Things I really liked:
  • Lisbon.  Fan fiction so often makes one think that Lisbon completely would turn her back on Jane.  That she would hate him. I kept thinking, that's not like her. She does love him (whether or not that means she's in love with him or not is a matter for debate).  She's barely recovering and she rushes out of the hospital to see him.  The relief in his face and that smile when he sees her. I think he was worried for a second. And she and her team band together to help him. She believes him immediately with no question.  There were some shippy moments too.  Communicated through eye contact and smiles. I think he almost wanted to touch her when she picked him up at the courthouse. But since it's Jane and Lisbon, that doesn't happen.
  • Grace: She's bitter and she's angry.  But she still is so happy for Jane. Which is exactly in line with what I expected.

And my word, why so pretty Simon Baker? It's almost not right.

-Bertram seriously comes off as just slimy political operative to me, and I'm okay with that.
-the lack of LaRoche was odd, I'm guessing he's gone if there's a new boss. Also, what happened to Hightower?
-My theory is a RJ operative on the jury got Jane off because RJ can't toy with Jane in jail. Hey, RJ can get operatives apparently everywhere, I don't think it's any more ludicrous than anything else in the RJ plotline.
-I hope they explore the murder thing, I do. I was kind of hoping there'd be some legal reason Jane got away with it. I'm thinking RJ has a serial killer network and Jane got one of them, but STILL. Yeah, I'm not so pleased with this. The only way this works is if Jane's opinion on murder evolves over the years somehow, otherwise it's just weird. It would bother me more that Jane is getting away with murder, but I made my peace with that after the finale and I'm not getting up in arms again, at least not right now.

I was of two minds about Lisbon's reaction all hiatus. I could have seen it going either way. I liked the way they did it, especially since they showed the obvious fondness the two of them have together.
And I surprisingly liked VP. Maybe this will be the season she will stop being hateful.

I couldn't see her going that way. But that was my read on the character and I'm glad I was right. LOL. I mean I can see too how others would read her differently. I just like being right. ;)
That's a good question about Hightower. The writers said she was off the show so I didn't question it at first, but it would be nice to have her be mentioned. The lack of LaRoche just seemed jarring.
I don't mind VP really. Though I think what's she did to Rigsby was awful. Dumping him, rubbing Craig in his face, then actually inviting him to her wedding? Yeah, no.
I should suspend my disbelief with this show. I mean after all.

Well, I agree, it probably is more realistic for Lisbon to support Jane unconditionally since she always does. I think part of me just *wanted* her to get angry at him this time.
VP was a huge jerk. I'll never be invested in her character, and hope she and Rigsby never get back together (though I have absolutely no hope that'll happen), but I would prefer it if she was less annoying this season than last.
I didn't know the writers ahd said Hightower was off the show. Huh. Well, alright then. I don't know where LaRoche is. Maybe he quit too. This show has a revolving door of annoying bosses.

Yeah, on their twitter account. "A to Q: We have no plans for Hightower return but anythings possible." I'm assuming the actress has moved on. I know that there's a new boss coming up some time after episode 2, but I figured that LaRoche would be around for an episode or two.

I can't say I'll really miss LaRoche. He had potential, but was underutilized. I am getting sick of a new boss every six months. What is wrong with the CBI? They have a million RJ moles and apparently can't hold onto a director.

I really like the actor but the character sorta blew. Now we know why the real CBI ceased to exist. ;)

HEE. Yes, that must be the reason.

I went back and forth on LaRoche. Soemtimes I thought he could be awesome, other times he was just creepy. Basically I'm not crushed that he's gone, but I wouldn't have minded if he'd stayed.

Whichever writer was manning their twitter account today told me we'd see LaRoche in the next episode. Didn't really answer why he wasn't around though.

Maybe no time? They did cram a lot into that ep.
